William Phillips is a Distinguished University and College Park Professor of Physics at the University of Maryland. He is also a physicist with the National Institute for Standards and Technology. He was a co-recipient of the 1997 Nobel Prize for Physics for the development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light. David Wineland is the Philip H. Knight Distinguished Research Chair and Professor of Physics at the University of Oregon. He is also a member of the Oregon Center for Optical, Molecular, and Quantum Science. Wineland was a co-recipient of the 2012 Nobel Prize for Physics for the manipulation and measurement of individual quantum systems. On February 21st, 2023, Phillips gave a talk titled “Time, Einstein, and the Coolest Stuff in the Universe” as a guest of the UO’s Department of Physics.
