Mosquito Fleet is a kayaking collective dedicated to democratizing access to waterways and supporting more people in cultivating a meaningful connection to water. Our work fosters climate justice action through on-water advocacy, popular education, and grassroots movement-building. We work to increase access to waterways, especially with communities who have been historically excluded by institutions of outdoor education, through our kayak lending library, kayak trainings, and guided paddles. This video series is an important part of our accessibility work, making our educational offerings more widely available online. The videos teach basic kayaking skills, on-water safety, and ways to take action on the water. The videos also offer vital context about Portland’s history of industrial pollution and exploitation on the Willamette River, such as through the Critical Energy Infrastructure Hub, and documents the local legacy of kayakers taking direct action to protect water, climate, and collective community health.
