On March 19, 2011, dozens of Portland's peace, social justice, environmental, labor, faith and other organizations held a rally and march called "Eight Years in Iraq, Nine Years in Afghanistan: How's the War Economy Working for You?" If you weren't one of the 1700 or more people at that event, you can watch the speakers, musicians, marchers and chanters on the two episodes of our weekly series, the Flying Focus Video Bus on the weeks of July 8 and July 15, 2013. ---------------------------------------------------- The main speakers addressed the key issues of the day: Wray Harris, president of Iraq Veterans Against the War-Oregon talked about getting the US out of Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, with a very impassioned speech showing his experience as a veteran has turned him away from war. Barbara Dudley of the Working Families Party drew connections between the economic crisis and the ongoing military misadventures of the U.S. And Francisco Lopez, director of CAUSA, looked at issues deepening in this country including attacks on civil liberties and immigrant rights. Eliana Machuca of Jobs with Justice then gave people a wide variety of ways to get involved. -------------------------------------------------------------- Along the two and a half mile march, the No War Drum Corps set a beat, while the crowd stopped to chant at the Oregonian, the Federal Building, the World Trade Center and Saturday Market with slogans such as "Money for jobs and education, not for war and occupation!" ------------------------------------------------------------ Back at the Square, General Strike, who played at the start of the march, started another musical set for the returning crowds. Under the end credits of part 2, the Vancouver Av. Baptist Church Choir sings a spiritual for peace.
