In February 2018, 16 teen students in Portland were selected to participate in Echo AiR—Open Signal's after-school program in which teen artists collaborate and learn technical skills for internships, jobs and education in the media arts field.
Ultimately, students decided to create a short film telling the story of a teen navigating their life after witnessing a school shooting. 'Drawn to the Past' is the result of the nine-week course.
The students trained on industry standard equipment and software, including Canon C100 MK II cameras, professional lights, microphones and laptops that came complete with Open Signal's Animation Kits (which include software like Dragonframe and the Adobe Creative Cloud.) After finishing the program, the students also became certified to check the equipment out for personal use.
