Colorful doesn’t begin to describe the dazzling brilliance of the Orgullo Morelense Cemiac Chinelos dancers as they stand patiently while photographers attempt to capture images of their extraordinary costumes. No one can pass this lively street scene without being drawn in by the impressive array of brightly colored feathers, sequins, and beads that detail this magical Mexican art form. The beaded headdress, mask and tunic combined weigh up to 70 pounds and cover the dancers from head to foot. Long fringes of beads create intricate images of jaguars, eagles, human faces, and abstract patterns that sway and swing. Each costume tells a different story that comes alive as the masked dancers start to move to the beat of traditional brass band tunes from Mexico.
