Genres:
Johnny Stallings, actor and writer, began a series of dialogues with inmates at the Two Rivers Prison in Umatilla, Oregon in 2008. These discussions led to his directing an inmate production of Hamlet, the first time a Shakespeare play had been performed within the walls of an Oregon prison. More dialogues and performances of plays followed. The film A Midsummer Nights Dream in Prison, directed by Bushra Azzouz, documents one of these productions. Open Hearts Open Minds, the organization that Johnny founded continues to bring theater, writing and music to men and women in the Oregon Prison system. In this month's episode of Northwest Art Focus, we talk with Johnny about his experiences, in the first of two programs focused on the work of Open Hearts Open Minds.
