"BRETHREN VOICES" - FEATURING THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF HEIFER INTERNATIONAL
In 1944, Dan West began outlining a simple plan to tackle hunger around the world. As a farmer from Indiana and a Church of the Brethren member, he had returned from helping to feed war-weary refugees, as a volunteer, during the Spanish Civil War.
Dan had gone to Spain, volunteering in a program, with Mennonites, Brethren and American Friends Service Committee. It was an effort to assist the survivors of the Spanish Civil War. He had developed a personal desire, to do as much for peace, as soldiers do in war. They gave out food and clothing to people in need and he saw, first-hand, that giving people, food, was a short-term solution. As a farmer, he felt that providing them with animals, would provide a steady supply of nutritious food for an entire family.
Eighty years ago, the idea became known as the “Heifer Project . With much planning and inspired generosity, Heifer Project became a reality and a joint effort with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. Initially, the UN planned to only send food goods and supplies, but decided to endorse the plan of the Brethren, to send livestock, to war torn Europe.
Many years have passed and Heifer Project became “Heifer International,” one of the most successful programs to assist people out of hunger, to living with sustainable futures.
“Brethren Voices” shares the stories of Heifer International, now celebrating its 80th Anniversary of assisting families around the Earth, to greater sustainability.
