"The Artist in Society: Talking with Hershell West (revised 2020)" examines the career of a black artist in California. In addition to his paintings and commissioned murals, West has worked extensively with at-risk youth, with arts commissions, with community organizations, and with other muralists. In the true spirit of public art, he has used his talent as an artist and his belief in the importance of community to take art and use it help to those who need it most. Born and raised in the segregated South, neither his family nor the larger community expected him to become an artist but he rose to the challenge and has today been called, by one reviewer, a "heroic community figure" (T. Keogh for "Video Librarian").
