City Club of Portland’s Program Committee presents Education in Oregon: What Works and Why It Matters, moderated by Julia Silverman, Education Reporter for The Oregonian.
Oregon elementary students are scoring near the bottom of all states in reading and math. Recent attendance reports found that 34% of Oregon students are chronically absent, well above the national average of 23%. And, with the dismantling of the federal Department of Education, federal programs supporting services for students with disabilities are at risk.
But there is hope! Research shows that certain strategies are moving the needle, including initiatives focused on early literacy, career and technical education, and students’ physical and social-emotional health. The panel will discuss how these and other strategies can be implemented effectively, and why investing in them matters—not only for students themselves, but for Oregon as a state.
