Intro to Video Synthesis: Lumen & LZX

Video synthesis—once a popular motion graphics technique—faded into obscurity following its heyday in the 1960s and '70s. Today, it's making a comeback—with modern artists using video synthesizers to veejay and create music videos, GIFs, video art and public video installations. Hardware tools like the LZX synthesizer (as well as software tools like Lumen) are fueling this renaissance.

In this introductory class—taught by Lumen creator Jason Grlicky—you'll get hands-on experience using both of these systems to generat retro-futuristic imagery from scratch. You'll learn techniques to create your own signal that you can use for real-time performance, vintage special effects or to feed your visual imagination. We'll also touch on the history of video instruments and the basics of modular synthesis.

This class is part of our Experimental Media track. Learn more about our media education tracks here.
