Opening Celebration: 'Black Life on Air' by Sharita Towne

Registration is closed for this event
Join us for the opening of Open Signal's next exhibition: 'Black Life on Air', by artist and winter 2019 New Media Fellow Sharita Towne.

Black Life on Air is an exhibition built from community captured audio. Some excerpts were recorded this past April, when StreamPDX's Airstream podcast trailer was parked in front of North Portland's In & Out Food Market for three days, inviting neighbors and community members in for a live podcast recording.

The results are paired with projected images and presented in this exhibition, where the public is invited to listen in and reflect on the conversations held that center around Black Life, community memory and organizing, changing neighborhoods and more.

Sharita Towne is s transdisciplinary artist born and raised on the West Coast of the U.S. along I-5—from Salem to Tacoma and down to Sacramento. She is a research-based video artist and printmaker most interested in creating interdisciplinary community art projects that engage local and global Black geographies, histories and possibilities. Sharita is an Assistant Professor in Intermedia, Thesis and Critical Studies at Pacific Northwest College of Art.
